RIPV2 BOF Minutes
Agenda
o Review Internet Draft
These are the proposed changes. Note that backward compatibility with
RIP-I is maintained in all cases.
The 2-byte Must Be Zero (MBZ) field following the family will contain an
AS number. Details are TBD (when I find someone who understands IGP/EGP
interactions).
Authentication will be supported. If the first RIP entry in the packet
has a family of -1, then the two bytes following the family will
indicate the type of authentication. Only plain-text password will be
defined for now. It will operate as OSPF does and will use the
remaining 16 bytes (or fraction thereof).
The remaining MBZ field will be split into 2 2-byte fields: MTU and
linkspeed. These will NOT be used for routing; just for information by
hosts which snoop RIP packets. The linkspeed will be encoded, in some
TBD fashion, since 16 bits is insufficient for LAN speeds.
There are additional issues which must be discussed. They include:
subsuming of routes, and route leaking.
